I’m an accountant who got good at the techie side, and then kept going.

I’m an accountant at the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, where I started at the bottom and worked my way up to Chief Accountant. Along the way I was usually the one asking why a task took as long as it did, and then quietly rebuilding it so it didn’t.

Excel was the tool of my trade, so I became one with my tool. Apprentice, then journeyman, then master. These days I compete with it: Excel esports is a real and gloriously niche sport, where competitors race through modelling and puzzle-solving under time pressure. I go up against the best in the world at it.

I believe in continual self-improvement, which lately means learning to be a leader. That one is a work in progress, and probably always will be.

What I’m into

SubjectWhat it is to me
ExcelThe tool of my trade and the thing I know most deeply.
Excel esportsCompetitive spreadsheet racing. Yes, really.

Emerging technology, especially AIWhere most of my curiosity goes right now.
LeadershipA work in progress.
Algorithms and computer scienceFrom a novice’s perspective. I like knowing how things actually work.
Popular scienceReading for the pleasure of finding things out.
The Las Vegas RaidersNot a technical interest. Just a fact about me.

Why I write here

Mostly for myself. Writing something down is how I find out whether I actually understand it, and this site is where I keep what I’ll want to look up again later.

The rest is for you. Most of what’s here was paid for with my own sweat and tears, and you may as well have the lessons quickly.

Getting in touch

The best place to find me is LinkedIn. Everything on this site is mine alone and doesn’t represent my employer.

Colophon

This site is a set of plain HTML pages built with Eleventy and served by Cloudflare. It’s set in Bahnschrift, Segoe UI and Cascadia Mono, and it looks like a spreadsheet on purpose. I draft and build it with the help of AI tools, which is only fair, given how much of my curiosity they currently occupy.
